Good evening All,

As everyone has experienced, the chase continues on many fronts. My Last post I had found the hood numbers for a particular Jeep and with help from fellow members, we came up with: U.S. Army 20910921

I again need any help or input you may desire. A little history first. I obtained the 1952 M-38 through gsaauctions a while ago. It came out of Haslett Michigan and was used by the Port Sanilac Fire Dept. which is about a 100 miles north of Detroit on Lake Huron(this was one of the two m-38’s sold at the same time, if you have the other one you may be in the same boat as me in findinng the unit markings. Course, if whoever you are belongs to this site, you took the liberty of removing the front black out lights, the bulbs out of the back lights, and the tailgate from the one I purchased. How do I know you may ask, the pictures don’t lie and when I called the caretaker to grouse about it, he stated, “the only person that had access to that area was the person who picked up the other Jeep next to it. I’m sorry.” My apologies for digressing.

The help/Input I need is deciphering the markings on the bumperettes.
I submit the following:

Passenger side bumperette

Drivers side bumperette.

Drivers side #2

Drivers side #3 with filter

Thoughts, questions ??
I will be attempting to sand the area under the weld seam on driver side bumperette.

Look forward to and Thanks for your Input,
I remain,
MattyT

I’m not sure where I have erred in posting pictures instead of links. Suggestions ?

Lt click on the thumb of the pic you want. When that full size pic appears rt click on the photo (not the thumb, the real one) and paste that link in between these: [img] [/img] Don't waste time opening the desired photo by it self on an otherwise empty page.

Second pic looks like "HQ 28", but there was something underneath that and all I can make out is "V ?". The other pics are going to be tough. I'll mess with them in an editor and see if anything gets better.

regards,
bob

After using 2500 grit, more to the puzzle

Passenger side bumperette definitely HQ-28 painted over SV-1

Drivers side bumperette a weee bit more challenging. Based on research some of what I am looking for is on front bumper. Off to sanding I went.

Passenger side Front bumper markings. _ _ - N G 2 F - 182

Drivers Bumperette

_?_ - N G

2 F - 1 _ 2

This is the section before the -NG

What I am struggling with is the beginning. I have no idea if it’s a symbol or what letter it could be.

Also, can I assume that it stayed in the state from national guard to fire dept ?
Suggestions. Any input greatly appreciated.

I’d guess a state abbreviation.

Looks like your best chance to narrow down it's origins are these two agencies:

Quote:
Haslett Michigan (GSA Auction Yard) and was used by the Port Sanilac Fire Dept (they should have info on where they obtained the jeep from)

The military disposes of it's surplus property thru DRMO's (Defense Re-utilization and Marketing Office). They usually hold the property fro several months and list it as available to other services and government agencies. Any qualified government agency can obtain the equipment usually just for the price of transportation. This is how many local community governments acquire very reasonably priced vehicles and other equipment. If after the few months of listing time is up they now release it to their civvy contracted marketing firm to sell off at auction to the public.

If you determine thru the GSA or Haslett FD which DRMO was the releasing agency and you can find a friendly ear at that DRMO you can usually find out what service and post it came from.

Looks like the drivers side is MI-NG 2F-182 which would make sense for it coming out of Michigan. Which is the Michigan National Guard, 2nd Field Artillery, 182nd Field Artillery Regiment, Headquarters, vehicle #28 which is based out of Detroit Michigan.
