I know the starter switches can accumulate carbon and burn if not cleaned periodically.

I have read through the electrical TM and just wanted to see if anyone had any more good tips before I take my starter out and clean the switch contacts.

I may write an article with photos to post up on the downloads section if I can get it back together properly.

Last year I reconditioned a (later) switch. .030 phenolic sheet is easy to work for new doghouse insulators..

Early open nose or late closed nose. The TM 9-1825B only covers the early open nose and it's switch. The TM 9-2920-215-35 Auto-Lite Starter MCZ4001UT is virtually un-obtainium!

Early open nose Starter. I have an extra NOS switch somewhere.

Are they difficult to clean and get back together?

I can't speak for the open nose switch but the switch for the close nose starter was not a problem..

Will find out next week after my monthly Army Reserves training weekend. Mine is not burned out so hopefully just a clean up.

Didn't yours short out last fall Rick?

If you find that your insulators are degraded shoot me an address, I've got plenty of phenolic sheet on hand.. Rick

I did some light research on this and found nothing on cleaning the switch . I did find some photos of rebuild kits. They don't look to intimidating and with few parts so it might not be that bad a task. I have no idea how the switch works compared to the later ones I am familiar with.

Yankee ingenuity.. The guys I travel with are quite resourceful. We bypassed the stock switch and cobbled this together..
