Now that my fuel issue could be solved, next!
When I bought my jeep, the brake and clutch peddles were froze on the shaft, when I test drove it, I had to pull the clutch up with my foot to engage it. Needless to say I didn't find the popping 2nd gear problem until after the purchase.
Aside from a total rebuild and pilot bearing replacement, is there anything I could do from the top and the shifter tower?
You can pull the top cover and check the shifting forks for wear and proper attachment. You can also inspect to some degree the condition of the shaft bearings, synchro and gear condition.
The pedals on just about every jeep with 20 years since the support assembly was last serviced will experience the sticking pedal syndrome when left idle for long periods. Soaking the pivot shaft with PB blaster while aggressively pumping both pedals against each other's direction will usually free them up. And as always a proper dis-assembly, cleaning, inspection, necessary parts replacement, lubrication and re-assembly will put them in perfect working order for another 20 years. _________________ Wes K

Put a new pin in the 2/3 fork and that helped a fair bit. It doesn't jump out as frequently and really only on a longer deceleration. There is a little wear in the fork faces but not enough to really repair or replace. By looking at the gears, and turning things it looks like there is enough wear in the slider/2nd gear synchronizer area to cause the problem.
It can wait for awhile to be rebuilt. _________________ 1951 M38
