Got the axle removed from the driver's side of this dana 44 axle and the findings were just about as bad as the other side....maybe worse since the axle bearing ended up falling to pieces as I was extracting the axle shaft. Here's a picture of the cone and cup from this side....

After pulling the axles I tried very gingerly to lift the carrier out of the pumpkin......it came with only the slightest amounf of help from two big screwdrivers. I haven't started disassembly on it yet but here are the cups from both sides of the carrier

Next I jumped on the pinion. Removal of this shaft was pretty straight forward. Here's a couple of pic's

So......anybody have any ideas what the numbers are on the end of the pinion? The +3 I understand......but the 12 and the 72 and the D??? Has anyone else seen these markings?

Jim,

If you need a new ring gear and pinion, I know a nice lady that has NOS ring and pinion sets for $50. She also has NOS carrier assemblies. Let me know if you need these parts and I'll call her. I am not sure if she'll ship though. It's worth a shot if you need these parts.
