Hi Tommy:

As a USMC jeep most likely it was originally fitted with a snorkel for deep water fording. That is why the hood cut-out is missing. It would of also had a 5-6 foot high exhaust pipe fitted to the back passenger side panel next to the spare tire mount.

Some people consider these jeeps more desirable and valuable.

You would also have an underwater ventilation system (or what's left of it, most likely) that worked in conjunction with the snorkel and extended exhaust.

The snorkel system is very clearly diagramed in the Canadian M38A1 Operators manual and the ventilation system in the standard M38A1 manuals.

Just my opinion, but this is one of the best and most capable 4x4 systems ever invented.

Check out the vintage M38 Army films on YouTube to see it in action...

Thanks. The piece I thought was missing turned up when I cleaned out the Jeep.
