I finally have my 134 engine running---in my jeep. Because I am using an after-market aluminum radiator and an electric cooling fan, I want to make sure I am correct on my operating temps: what is considered normal operating range temperature on the little L-134 engine? Mine seems to be runing a bit hot, when I get it warmed up and drive it around the block, it is 200 degrees. Is that normal? Also, when I park and turn off the engine, I am getting a pretty good volume of coolant flowing out the over-flow (I need an over-flow bottle).

Any advise is appreciated.

Thanks,

Jordan

Jordan,

Always start your info search with the appropriate TM (Tech Manual). In this case TM 9-8012 for the M38 (since this is a M38/M38A1/M170 board and you said L134).

The TM 9-8012 M38 Operator's and Maintenance manual is available as a free download on our web site's "Downloads" page:
http://www.willysmjeeps.com/v2/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=62

The answer to your question is on page 29, section 43 Starting the engine PAR 43j and again on page 25 Section 29 Water Temp Gauge.

A note whenever you are troubleshooting the first step should be to check the accuracy of the original stock 24V electrical water temp gauge. This is done by removing the sender and hanging it in a pan of water making sure it doesn't touch the sides with it's 24V wire connected and the master switch on the sender grounded with a jumper to the block. It should read at the bottom when the water is cold and 212 when the water boils. You can add a thermometer to the water if you want to track the gauge's accuracy from 60-260 degrees.

It is also a wise move to install a direct reading mechanical gauge in place of the electric sender to get a true reading with a fresh jeep or engine.

Thanks Wes. I need to show some initiative and dive into the books as you quite correctly advise. You guys have just spoiled me with your quick responses saving me time reading. Hence forward, I will go to the TM's first.

Thanks for your help. It is always appreciated.
