Hello Chuck,
Sounds like you are building a motor pool class project not factory class so you will want to decide what unit you want your jeep to represent and in what period in time.
I say this because the Army regs changed several times on the marking system. So it's best you select a reg that was current during the period in time you selected.
Next is researching the unit of assignment. Go to their web site and find their historian and look for photos of jeeps from the period you are representing. This will give you a very good mental picture of what you will want.
As for selecting a hood number the hobby standard is to not come up with a fictitious number that years from now might be construed as possibly original to the jeep by a new researcher. You can select the first 3 or 4 digits that were common to other jeeps close to your serial then use the last four digits of your jeep's serial. This will make it obvious in the future to a researcher that the hood number is a made up number. _________________ Wes K

Hi Wes,
Thanks for all your good info.
Does anyone out there have a ser# close to mine so that I can get an idea what three or four digits I'll need to start with as Wes suggested?
What about official plasement dimensions and sizes for a few generic stars?I've got the Weare NH rally to get ready for and will research unit #'s later. My 38 looks pretty naked in 24087only.

Hey Chuck - my serial is 69046 with a DOD of May 1952. When I asked this question a year or so ago, Wes told me that a prefix of 209 or 2094 would be correct. I used 2094 and finished out with the serial number. Here is the link to my facebook page - look at the photos under restoration complete to see stars, stenciling, etc. Good luck - Sonny (you will have to copy and paste the link)
Chuck,
As Sonny mentioned 2094XXXX will work for you.
The dimensions for the stars and locations are on my photo storage site. Use the AR850-5 references for 1950 to 54 and the TB 746-93-1 for 1954 to 1975.
If you use the WWII reg AR 850-5 make sure you get the hood star right. WWII and up to about 1949 the single point went towards the windshield and the two points towards the grill. From 1950 on the single point goes towards the grill.

Looks like my new hood # will be 20949309 if I follow everone's suggestions .With #'s 2in. tall, 1in up from bottom edge of hood then 1in. space, then U.S. ARMY in 2in letters, and 20in star on the hood with the single odd point forward. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Thanks for all the help.

That's what I did with mine. The only thing that I would add is that you need to position the hood numbers so that they clear the fording opening and on the other side so that they are not obstructed by the BO light - spacing between numbers may be dictated by these positions to make them fit - Sonny _________________ 1951 M38, 1952 M38, 1952 M100,1946 Bantam T3-C, RT-66/GRC, PP-112/GR, MT-299, DT-44 Mine Detector, MVPA # 33068, PMVPA CO

My M38 is 36920 Delivered in October 51.
That's 32,389 jeeps between mine and yours in 8 months. _________________ Tropical Veteran

Also keep in mind the original M38 hood numbers had U.S.A. in the top row. The U.S. ARMY in the top row is a "applied in the field thing" after a paint job and that arrangement doesn't start showing up until late 54 and early 55.
The two photos of the Willys factory delivery lot in 1950/51 show what they left Willys with.
