I have a 12v starter for a Willys, it is the later starter wuth the covered front... Also has a 12v Selinoid on it to allow for key start...

Same one as used in the M38A1...

You'll need to know what bell housing and what flywheel ring gear you have or you may spend money on something that won't work.

The late CJ 12 volt starters do not fit the early small bore starter bell housing with the 97 or 124 tooth ring gears. They only fit the later large bore bell housings with the 129 tooth ring gear.

The 97 tooth ring gear goes with a 10 tooth pinion early starter MZ4113 (6V) or MZ 4124 (12V).

The 124 tooth ring gear goes with a 9 tooth pinion MZ4137 and MZ4162 starter

The 129 tooth ring gear goes with the later closed nose large bore 9 tooth pinion 6V and 12V starters.

Thanks for the response guys!! It a huge help... The flywheel gear has 97 teeth and the widest opening in the bell housing for the the starter is 3 inches...does tha make sense? I remember using a 6v starter after converting to 12v before...Thanks again for the help and if you have a starter for my application, please let me know. SBJ

It's easier to tell bells apart by the size of the two starter mounting bolts. Small frame starters use two 3/8" bolts and large frame starters use two 1/2" bolts.

You 97 tooth flywheel ring gear is only compatible with a 10 tooth starter pinion which is found on the MZ4113 (6V) and MZ4124 (12V) which are small frame starters mounted with two 3/8" bolts.

The MZ4124 is the WWII and early postwar military 12V starter and very rare to find. The MZ4113 (6V) was used for WWII and throughout CJ2A production and works just fine on 12 volt as long as the engine is in good condition and tune and you do not crank it for long periods.

There are aftermarket and Nippon conversions that can fit a 12 volt starter in your bell but expect to pay upwards of $300.
