Hello,

I am seeking:

1. advice on what to look for when shopping for a wiring harness. I know about checking to see if the insulation on the wires is pliable. What else should I be careful to avoid? What features should I look for in a quality harness?

2. 1 or 2 quality wiring harnesses at a fair price.

As always, thank you.

I assume you are shopping for used harness?

1-Determine it is in fact an M38 harness.

2-Determine which serial group of M38 the harness fits.

3-Inspect wire for condition.

4-Inspect the Douglas connectors to insure all their parts are there and the wire or terminal pin is not shorted to the shell.

5-Check that all Scintilla connector plugs and receptacles are there and in good shape.

a-Light switch plug (2 for early M38)
b-Firewall accessory plug for early M38.
c-Firewall plug for voltage regulator and small single plug for distributor.
d-Radio power plug.
e-Slave cable receptacle early M38.
f-Trailer receptacle.

I will inspect for those features on any harness.

I favor looking for unused harness for my M38a1. Either an old unused harness or a newly manufactured one.

Any other features to keep in mind when comparing or buying a newly made harness such as wire type or wrapping?

Thank you again.

For a new 24 volt water proof correct M38 harness I only know of two sources. Vintage Wiring of Maine and Jeff Smith. Both know the correct way to build a correct harness. You will only need to provide them with what serial your M38 is and if it is properly equipped (electrically) for the serial number. Then they will want to know if you wish to add any additional circuits IE turn signals or extra lights or two service stop lamps etc or a 3 or 4 wire main ignition switch or a non-stock generating system.

Main changes in the M38 main harness are:

1 - one or two plug main light switch. (two plug switch runs a completely separate harness from the switch to the trailer receptacle.
2 - Auxiliary circuit plug on firewall.
3 - 3 battery box mounted circuit breakers.
4 - Dash instrument cluster mount circuit breaker
5 - Dash mounted or distributor mounted radio ignition noise filter

There are other changes that affect separate wiring that will not be included in a new main harness anyway.
