Hillbilly,

We have a place here in Tidewater called Browning's Starter and Alternator Exchange (I think). They have done 24 volt work for me in the past. Their prices are not too high, and they are fairly quick. I can save you some shipping cost, because I am planning to contact you about some M38A1 stuff again, anyway. Let me check with them to make sure they can do a rewind (I am sure they can), and I will call you later in the week with some information.

Sam

You can rebuild it yourself using the manual excerpts loaded on out Downloads page. Are you saying it humms and gets hot without engaging the kick start switch?

Yes WES it started humming when I hooked up the battery cable ...

I then made sure the switch wasnt stuck ahead which it wasnt ..from there I
noticed it was getting hot towards the rear end of it..Before I started resto I made sure of the engine works..compression , oil pressure etc I had to jump start it as the batterys where shot..anyhow acquired 2 2hn batterys over the weekend wanted to start it to make sure everything was 100 % before I started to paint the body parts ...

I honestly dont have time to rebuild it as between work and the farm here no time just sundays for myself Rolling Eyes

I will e-mail ya SAM thanks..

If it doesn't work out in Tidewater I know of another shop in VA that will do it. About a 1 week turn around. Probably about $150. Let me know if you need them.

If electricity is making it into the starter when you connect the battery cable and you have not engaged the kick start switch then your kick start switch is shorted internally. You may only need a new kick start switch on top of the starter.

When you step on the start kick pedal the lever movement first pushes the pinion gear into full engagement with the flywheel then the electrical contacts are forced closed and then electricity goes to the starter.

Heat came from letting spin so long. Starter limits are 30 seconds on and 15 seconds off. The Bendix drive wear is usually limited to the bushings which are serviceable. If you are basing your wear indicator on the rounded edges of the pinion gear teeth that is not an issue.

The early starter is the hardest to find either replacements or replacement parts for. It is also the most expensive of the two starters.
