|
|
A friend of mine bought a sealed NOS Signal Stat turn signal unit during the Huntsville MVPA convention.
Now it is my job to install it and get it to work. This unit was in amazing shape due to it being sealed up.
I have installed it cording to the diagram. The problem to me seems to be the flasher module but I am looking for any input I can to help solve the problem
When you have the power on and move the signal stat handle up or down the relays all work like they should. But the turn lights stay on and do not flash. The bulb on the stalk does not light up either and I have checked the bulb.
So does anyone know if the problem would be in the flasher unit or what I think is the resistor?
I took the flasher off and put 24 volts to it and it stayed at a sold 24 volts but I am not sure how to test this flasher unit.
Can anyone help?

Just a thought, but does the signal switch and stalk light ground to the column. I couldn't get a CJ3A to flash or work until I scraped the column paint off to get ground there. ??? John |

Good question. I took an alligator clip and ran it from the mounting screw and clipped it to the dash. I can check again and see if maybe I did not get a good ground.
I was reading about testing flasher units on the internet and if they offer no resistance with an ohm meter they are bad. I will check this one again but I don't think it had any resistance.

Sure sounds like a bad ground. I would attach a ground wire to the stalk switch and run it down the column and behind the dash to a very good stripped bolted ground on the firewall. I wouldn't waste time scraping paint under the clamp.
Your copy of the wiring is much better quality than mine. Can you scan it in 8x10 segments and email them to me? _________________ Wes K

Later last night, I ran two alligator clips from the turn lever assembly, one from the screw that tightens up the clamp around the steering column and the other from the body of the lever assembly. I connected one to the dash and the other to the duze clip from the instrument panel, still no flashing only solid on turn lights. Still not convinced the stalk light bulb is good. I Need to test it on a battery.
That flasher unit is easy to pull off of those pins. I am thinking of finding a new thermal 24v flasher module and wire it up just to see if that makes a difference.
Is that brown tube thing under the flasher unit a resistor?
I will work on scanning in that wiring diagram.

So does that resistor ever go bad?
What is the unit of resistance for it? |

Hummm....more to think about. I pulled the flasher off and plugged it back into only one of the sockets. Then I wired the meter inline with it. When I tried the turn lights I got a constant 24 volts. No off and on action.
Next I ran the meter to the socket of the indicator light. No power in the socket. I tested the bulb with a 12 volt battery and it glows. So I guess there is no power going to the G wire.
Ideas?

Well….I have an update.
I went by NAPA the other day and picked up a new 24 volt electro-mechanical flasher. Not the same as the one in the control box but I hooked it up and Ta-Da the turn lights flashed.
But the turn lever light still did not work. So this was making me crazy, so I disconnected all the wires for the turn switch and ran the meter to each one to figure out their function. So the ‘B’ wire runs to the cup part of the bulb socket on the handle. None of the wires had any continuity to the button contact inside the socket!!!!
Turns out that ‘G’ wire had a short in it near the screw on connection for attaching to the control box. Dang that was a pain to find. So I cut that connection off and soldered a new one on and now the turn indicator bulb has power. No need to run a ground from the switch body to a ground.
Anyway, I have created diagrams to show how the control box works and the Signal-Stat 600. I need to clean them up first. Then I can send it to Wes or anyone else that might want those or the original install diagram. Maybe we can get it on the web for folks to find. |

That would be very helpful! I've got the same setup for my M38; just one more job on my never-ending "to-do" list for the winter months......
