Is there any reason I should change the brake shoes other than them being 66 years old? They look to have about 3/16ths left which would be plenty or should I just change them anyway.
The jeep may be 66 years old but I doubt very seriously if the brake shoes are anywhere near that old.
You should change brake shoes when they are worn to the point the lining rivets may damage the drums or if they perform unsatisfactorily or they become soaked with leaky brake fluid or cannot be made to fit the drums concentrically anymore.
If you will take a moment to read your TM 9-8014 Operator's & Maintenance manual especially on page 276 you will see that the linings when new measured 7/32" and you are at the point now where your pads have only lost 1/32" and although it's not published in this manual you easily have 1/8" to go before replacement becomes necessary. Unless of course they suffer some other form of damage. _________________ Wes K

I did as you suggested Wes and read the specs on the brake shoe linings and like you said they were 7/32nds when new. I have only pulled one drum so far but they look like they have worn evenly and they are clean. If the other side looks as good they are staying.
