|
|
I have read people saying that it is not to big of a task to cut a harness down to size to fit my m38a1 from other m series nos harnesses.
I have also seen people saying that a nos harness has all of the age of an original harness but just hasn't been exposed to the environment and they wont last very long.
My first question would be where can I find a decent harness at a reasonable price? I've looked around on the internet and haven't really found anything that I think would be cheap enough to take a chance on.
My second question is if a nos harness from another vehicle isn't a good choice what options do I have other than just to bite the bullet and shell out the cash for a new correct harness. Thanks Jeff _________________ Jeff Loosier

This is amazing! You posted this question today:

And a new guy tacked a very similar question on to a parts jeep post today;:

I already have a '52 a1 that I am restoring but it is missing a lot of parts and the parts jeep appears to have just about everything I need but I am sure the harness is probably toast. I am interested how you made your harness could you explain a little of it to me because I need one. Thanks. |
So I'll just repost what I posted 5 minutes ago to his post:

1-Just order an aftermarket 12 volt CJ5 harness for a 55-71 CJ5. ... You can adapt a civvy 12V fuel sender to the M38A1 tank but you .... need to visit other on line boards for 1940-1960's classic car & truck restorer's opinions.

Simply put:
1: For $800 you can buy a brand new custom made harness (caution here because brand new means assembled date) which may contain some NOS rubber parts from old military surplus stocks which do not last long when they are exposed to the elements.
2: for about $300 you can buy all the actually brand new materials to build your own 24V harness.
3: for about $40 plus freight you can buy a NOS late M series truck harness and adapt it to your jeep. Just make sure the surplus NOS harness has a date on the package newer than 1990 and things should go well for you.
Note that option 1 assumes you are mechanically inclined and can follow written directions. Option 2 & 3 assume you are familiar with electrical work and wiring diagrams and are mechanically inclined. _________________ Wes K

I feel comfortable doing either and would certainly go for the $40.00 harness to at least give it a try. I just haven't been able to find a deal like that. All the ones I have found are in the $300.00 range. _________________ Jeff Loosier

I explained how to do it on your M38A1 post; read that. Note that it is not just a matter of Cutting it down; you have to make some of the wires too. But all M series wire numbers are the same. The M35 harnesses on eBay are new. Yes you need skill and patience to make an M series harness but it is not really all that hard. Just tedious. I made a complete M38 harness including all the under dash wiring. Works perfectly. I got Douglas connectors from MM to make it look right.
Total cost was $75 but I already had the right crimper. _________________ M38 23100 June 51

Would solder be just as good as a crimp? _________________ Jeff Loosier

Soldering will work if the pins you are using are designed for use with solder. Usually crimp style pins are bored small strictly for the insertion of the bare wire of the correct gauge. Solder type pins usually have an additional void or well for the solder. With that in mind it is safe to say if you have access to solder type pins then fine if not you will always run the risk of inadequately securing the wire in the pin. _________________ Wes K

You will quickly get tired of soldering instead of crimping. Look on that big on line auction site for a crimper; they are often on there. _________________ M38 23100 June 51
