Hi....I am new to this form and my M38A1 Series Survey will be posted soon.
I came into a 67' M38A1 CDN2, CFR # 67-08171 built in Feb.1967 by Kaiser Jeep in Windsor, Ontario. It was disposed in 1980 due to a possible accident. It was delivered to CFB Petawawa in 1967 and used exclusively by the 3rd Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment. It was discovered in a scrap yard and rebuilt (to motor pool standard) from 2009 to 2011 by a retired military mechanic who had worked on it from 1967 to disposal. (retirement project). Although rebuilt, the mechanic reused many working parts so I have replaced many parts since purchase in 2017.....and still working on it.
In the near future I will have a ton of questions and may possibly be able to respond to some based on my "school of hard knocks" experience working on this jeep in the last year as well as having read many threads from other sites and having done much research on many of the jeeps systems.

Regards,

lesk

Hi Les, I say welcome!

Tapping the knowledge and experience in this forum takes a commitment to researching the manuals and combing through years of posts --- all well worth it. Got to pay the dues.

I discovered willysmjeeps shortly before I bought my first-ever jeep, a M38, about 4 years ago --- also a retirement project (when I get ready to do that, I'm only 63 and still in the rat-race every day full time). I don't think I'd have taken that step if I hadn't found this nugget! Watching the folks here convinced me that even a rookie like me had a chance. Great stuff going on here! The camaraderie is pretty good too.

Get ready to drink out of a fire hose! And watch out for the mine fields.... Shocked

Blue-gray smoke on deceleration or during downhill descents with no throttle is oil being pulled into the combustion chamber due to high vacuum. Your A1 has overhead valves for the intake. Overhead valve engines get oil sucked past failing valve guide seals. The other possible is pulling oil past the piston rings.

The first (valve guide seals) is fairly easy to deal with and doesn't require a major disassembly of the engine.

Read the manuals and these threads, its all covered multiple times, including ways to test for each scenario.
