It works differently. It requires linkage changes. It requires modification to induction pipes. It is not designed for off angle / offroad driving.

The Carter was designed specifically for the jeep off road operation and fills all needs perfectly when properly maintained. Parts and kits are readily available and technical data is readily available so maintaining a road worthy Carter WO, YS, YF is very easy to do.

If you aren't going to rebuild your original Carter, then a Solex will work; while they are not strictly a bolt on proposition, it isn't hard to plumb and fit them either.
i have used one on a CJ and one on a GPW when the original WO leaked badly and they work fine.
I have also heard of guys using Weber Land Rover carbs which they say, are not hard to fit; I have not tried one of those. But I am intrigued.
Of course, for a proper restoration, a good Carter is best. Mine was rebuilt by Scout Pilot and it is perfect. Use a new rebuild kit; do not use an old one; at least here, gas without ethanol is hard to get.

I put a Solex on my M38 when rebuilding the jeep and just wanted something to get it running - bought it on EBay for $60 used - hooked up easily and has worked perfectly since then. I have the proper carb for rebuilding but just haven't gotten to it yet.
