I have acquired a 28V 60Amp Alternator.

However the existing lower bracket is too short.

Is there a longer one? if so, where can I buy it?

On my M37 I used the original 25A generator bracket.

You may have to lengthen yours or fabricate a longer one. Which model alternator do you have?

I have a Prestolite 28 volt 60 amp Alternator.

The current lower gen bracket is 1" too short.

I spoke with John Bizal of Midwest Military.

He found the longer lower gen bracket to fit the Prestolite 5102ut ALTERNATOR. It’s 7.25” long approximately 1” longer then the original same hole pattern.

Post a photo when you receive it. Also post dimensions if possible. Or just post the 3 view photos and I’ll do the dimensions art work so you can fill in the blanks. My M37 used it,s original 25 A gen bracket.

The M38 and M38A1 25 amp generator mount with rubber bushings which accounts for the large mounting holes in the original bracket and the front engine mounting plate. The 60amp alternator, as used on the M38A1 CDN 2&3 mounts with 3/8” bolts without bushings so a special mounting bracket (a heavier cast bracket) has a steel spacer that fills the large hole in the engine mounting plate so only a bolt regular is required. So find a bracket from a used CDN2 or 3 engine.

Can you post any illustrations of the hole plug for the front plate and the Heavy bracket bar?

You get that by right clicking on the photo and using this URL: http://willysmjeeps.com/v2/modules/gallery/albums/album520/521360E5_A422_4A95_BAD5_D6FB35041383.thumb.jpeg

That yields only the thumbnail size photo while you probably want at least the middle size photo. To get the slightly larger middle size photo you left click on the thumbnail photo and the middle size photo will open. Now right click that photo and use that URL for a useable size image: http://willysmjeeps.com/v2/modules/gallery/albums/album520/521360E5_A422_4A95_BAD5_D6FB35041383.sized.jpeg

Thanks for the photo Brian. Can you also give us the part number, ORD#, NSN for it.

It would really be nice if someone who has all these parts laying out handy could offer us the dimensions: B ?

Thanks for the help posting the photo. The alternator support bracket (shown as part of the 100 Amp alternator installation in M38A1 TM9-2320-208-20P, January 1966, fig.27 but without a part number) has part numbers; 2920-00-930-8640, ORD 8699706, Leese Neville LN 37683, Canadian stock no. 2920-21-848-9044. So this special support bracket was used with the 100A alternator on the M38A1 and with the 60A alternator on the Canadian M38A1 CDN 2 and CDN 3. The adjusting arm may be different but I don't have a sample handy. The M38 also used the 100A alternator system (ORD 8 SNL G-740, June 1956) but it does not mention if a special support bracket was used. Dimesions A=7.25", C = 7.25" Installing the alternator is a snug fit.

Would you have copies of the pages from the M38A1CDN2/3 Canadian parts manual that illustrate the 60A installation and show the parts listing?

When you posted:
Quote:
The alternator support bracket has part numbers; 2920-00-930-8640, ORD 8699706, Leese Neville LN 37683, Canadian stock no. 2920-21-848-9044.
Were you quoting the numbers from your bracket's packaging?

The Canadian Army Supply Catalogue 7610-21-848-9044 (my copy has no cover so date unknown) had a several page supplement for the CDN2 (again undated but presumably about 1968). It lists the bracket as 2920-21-848-9044 and Ordnance no. 8699706. I use a major dealer's card files to convert 8699706 to 2920-00-930-8640 with a Leece Neville number 37683. There are no illustrations of the alternator set up in the CDN 2 or 3 supplements and no illustrations of the alternator in the Canadian Repair Manual for the CDN 2. The only place I have seen this bracket is in the January 1966 TM9-2320-208-20P: shown in the illustration of the 100A alternator set-up. But no part number. No reference to it in the 1966 -34P parts book either.

I had no luck finding anything on the two stock numbers you posted.

As you said the bracket is illustrated in TM 9-2320-208-20P but is not listed by any numbers.

It is listed by ORD# in the TM 9-2320-208-34P on page 152 under Kit, 100 ampere, 28 Volt, rectified ac-dc generating system (8699720) as:
Bracket, Mounting, generator (8699706)

It is also illustrated and listed in C-3 to TM 9-8015-2 Section III in Fig 198 and by ORD# in Par. 281 b (4).

That is a very nice upgrade to the stock 25Amp generator. Can you please post pictures of the fisnished set up? Also with the 60amp unit would you have to use the regulator?
