I'm restoring a 1952 M38. The brake drums are not in terrible shape but they would benefit from being turned. I don't know their past history. What should the thickness of the drum be? Or, what is the maximum diameter of the inside of the drum after turning and still have a usable drum? _________________ MVPA #30367

Here's where the M38 owner should not only have a set of the military manuals applicable to his M38 he should also have the CJ2A/CJ3A civvy manual SM-1002.
The info you seek is not published in the Army Manuals but it is published in the Civvy SM-1002.
The ID of a new factory drum is 9.00 inch (209 mm). The max recommended material removal on these drums is .030" (0.762mm). This would effectively increase the ID of your drums to 9.060". The SM-1002 recommends when this size material removal is done to use the factory .030 oversize brake shoes or shim the new linings with an .030" shim.
