I just bought a 1952 M38 that has a replacement L134 engine that needs a fuel pump (the existing pump is a single pump without vacuum...maybe from a CJ?). I think I'm seeing engine serial number MC36732, but can't be sure, the MC3 part of the number is very pitted and hard to make out...

I see in ORD 9 SNLG-740 (Sept 55) that there was a fuel pump change after serial number 74419. Is there any way to confirm which engine I have without taking it apart? I got a ton of extra parts with this Jeep including a couple used fuel pumps, one stamped 9585 and the other 4260 w/ primer lever. I'm hoping one of these pumps would be right for my engine and want to order a rebuild kit...so whats different between the before and after 74419 serial number?

Thanks,

Mike B Smile

MC74419 is the turnover point for the new engine block/bell housing and the changes to the fording/vent systems. It nice to see a new guy using the books.

I have the second photo album in our member's albums page. Visit my photo albums and review them at your leisure and you will see a lot of your questions answered with something as simple as a photo. Hint, start with the L134 engine development album.

The big change in M38 fuel pumps between 1950 and 1952 were the incorporation of several important service bulletins into ne pump production and the fording vent system provision for the bell housing presurization. But any of the applicable pumps can be made to function in any of the M38's.

Unless you are building a factory vehicle, as Wes says any of the applicable pumps would work for a motor pool restoration.

Living in Maryland that priming lever might come in handy.
