With the M38's easy access thru the center removable floor boards the least amount of work is to separate at the bellhousing if you have no need to do any tranny/transfer repairs. It takes an experienced jeeper an hour or 1.5 hours to do that. It's the little things like missing hoisting bracket or very corroded exhaust/intake hardware and etc. that slow things down. _________________ Wes K

I want only the engine to be removed.. major problem with the head stands..... I have already remove the exhaust bracket the radiator and ad i see i must unscrew the bolts from bellhousing...any idea on the upper bolts? Must i open the floor panel for easy access
This is not the ideal place to deliver a step by step presentation on M38 engine removal. All the individual steps are very clearly listed in the service manual. TM 9-8012 Pages 122-132 removal & 133-140. Just ignore references to disconnection tranny/transfer.

Which upper bolts do you refer to?
As I said in my first post the floor panels will give you easy access so yes you must remove them to obtain the easy access. _________________ Wes K

I just recently went through this entire process, and I separated the engine from the transmission at the bell housing since the transmission was fine and the engine needed a complete overhaul.
One thing I love about the Willy's is the engineering that went into the serviceability. By all means pull all those firewall/floor panels out of there...it is a pretty quick process and you'll thank yourself later with the increased accessibility.
