Yeah, Iraq and port-a-potties in the Summer sun. Better, though, than the toilet CHUs we used. Those backed up ALL THE TIME! WTF did those dumb-ass soldiers eat and do in there????

Flies buzzing around in the Summer air.... Yum.

And we had someone get caught having sex in one of those!

probably the most over engineered license plate holder.



Its bolted to the jerry can holder


I left a gap to allow for the strap, and electrical wire.




will unbolt it and set aside for the next paint day.


spray painted the pre breather a semi-gloss black. Looks shiny when wet, but dulls out after it dried.

What a pain! I had to add a bottom plate and tray for the cowl battery box. It wasn’t there when I bought it. But there was a weird bracket on the inside of the tub the previous owner used , probably for the heater.

Anyway, I broke a grade 8 bolt off in the weld nut. It twisted like a piece of straw. I wasn’t even putting Ugga dugas to it, but an small ratcheting wrench. Oh well. Not going to bother with drilling that one out. There are 7 others holding it in.
The new battery bracket fits nice in the location.


Got the shovel and axe in epoxy.






Other small things done.
Patent plate installed on the wheel well.
First aid kit bracket and J hook installed.
New used oil pan showed up today. Will paint that one too on my next grey day.
Pile of parts is dwindling.

Yesterday after work was wildly productive in the house.
On the jeep, I did some grey painting.
I bought one of those little detail touch up air HVLP's and it did a good job painting the bolts in place instead of me removing it.

Got the axe, shovel and windshield latches done.
Threw some rattle can gray on the oil pan to match what the machine shop did for engine paint. (new ford grey it said on the can)





Seats are back in.

going to rain today- Must be because i washed the cars yesterday. Always happens.

Put some spar varnish with UV protectant on the axe and shovel.

You can get precision matched v-belts from McMaster-Carr, that's what I had to do on my M38.

In the mean time while waiting for some parts I am running my wiring.
I have a battery disconnect switch- use similar ones on our small boats.
I intend to put this in the firewall near the cowl battery box. Saw a few posts on here from 2007 that did this.



My Jeep will be 12volt. I checked all my lights- they have 24v bulbs in them, and work


But I can switch the bulbs to 12v ones. Sorry it’s upsidedown. I couldn’t edit for whatever reason. The 24v bulb in my hand is replaced by this #67 which I use on my f100.

I bought a wire harness from Walcks I think. But not a 24v, it’s 12v with flashers. One thing I dislike about this is what an unprofessional “instruction package” it has. The harness is high quality connections and wiring, but the instructions with wire description was half hand written and photo copied. For like 350$ + for real!

I have the wiring stretched out to the general location it needs to be, but I need to attach the clips to the body.

Question- I was doing a lot of research on the circuit breakers like I read in Nauga’s Ok Boomer build thread. My Jeep does not have them. Not even the holes for attachment. Then in tech manual it stated the serial number 65972 which is before mine and how they were eliminated in May 52. My Jeep is a May ‘52 and serial number is 66792 which obviously is after the break.

I can add a Circuit breaker in the wiring, or inline fuses, or a fuse panel(by modifying my harness).

There's a circuit breaker inside the military 3-lever light switch.

Mine is also 12V. I installed a 60-amp (Klixon) master c.b. for the alternator and in-line fuses for the horn and turn-signal flasher.
I also installed a battery disconnect switch (+ side not ground).

I bet your siren is heavy amp draw --- might need a separate circuit.

Hi April,
Bretto redrew the M38 wiring diagram to utilize as much as possible while going to 12 volts and flashers. He installed a small fuse panel and relays for the horn, headlights, etc.

Very slick and easy to do. It fits right on the cowl battery box where the breakers would have gone.

The wiring diagram is on his page and I’m sure on Wes’ pages under M38 electrical.

Looks like it is time to study basic electric principles. 24V lamps that glow on 12V are drawing a bit more current then 12V bulbs will. So switch to the correct bulbs for the voltage you are using and save new problems down the road. Adequate Circuit breakers for circuits used are a better idea then the military's approach to minimal circuit breaker use. Also circuit breakers are designed to interrupt excessively high current flow. With this in mind you must select circuit breaker amperage ratings that are correct for your 12 volt systems.

Where can you get the needed knowledge to be a successful amateur electrician? Just google electrical principals applied to automotive use, download and study. I am an aircraft mechanic by trade and with 22 years of military experience. When I retired in 1989 I opened my own aviation repair business where I have been a successful civilian aircraft maintainer and inspector from 1990 thru today. I have been in this jeep hobby since 1970. I usually custom build my own harnesses and my favorite reference manuals are those the FAA designed for civilian aircraft maintenance technicians. These are a set of 3 basic knowledge guides published by the FAA for use by Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics, General Handbook AC65-9A, Airframe Handbook AC 65-15A and Powerplant Handbook AC 65-12A in conjunction with the FAA Advisory Circular Manuals AC 43.13-1B "Acceptable Methods, Techniques, and Practices - Aircraft Inspection and Repair" & AC 43.13-2B "Acceptable Methods, Techniques, and Practices – Aircraft Alterations "

Not off the top of my head. Did you look in his photo album? April indicated she had instructions with her new harness and it would usually be advisable to use the diagram that comes with the harness.
