With the spoke of the steering wheel at 6 o'clock, there is about 3 inches of play along the perimeter of the wheel when rotated counter clockwise. No play when rotated clockwise. Is there some type of adjustment in the steering box that will eliminate this or could it be something else?

That is a very odd symptom.

Get a helper to operate the steering wheel while you lie under the jeep and observe.

1-Have the helper locate the wheel dead center in the middle of the 3" of free play and get a good solid grip on the wheel so it cannot move. Now you apply pressure to every link in both directions. Fix the loose joints you find.

2-From that center of the play position have your helper slowly turn the wheel for a left turn. The instant the left front tire starts to move hollar for him to hols what he has. How far CCW was he able to turn the wheel before the left wheel started to move?

3-From that center of the play position have your helper slowly turn the wheel for a right turn. The instant the right front tire starts to move hollar for him to hold what he has. How far CW was he able to turn the wheel before the right wheel started to move?
