Varnish or protective coating. I think it has to come off. Is there a method to remove this? Or is it just elbow grease and sandpaper?

Those fittings are plated, as are the Douglas connectors
Sanding will remove or damage the plating, leading to
corrosion.

If it's cosmolene or something similar you might try mineral
spirits or maybe alcohol.

Just be sure it's compatible with the wiring.
