Perhaps you could show this to us. A photo or a manufacturer's instruction sheet? With us not being able to positively identify your system we can be of very little help troubleshooting it.

Wes, I have read the Pertronics installation guide and find my system equal to figure 2 in their instructions. I do not have a ballast resistor, that maybe the problem for over heating the coil.

I have no experience of ballast resistors at all, can you give me a lesson please

Wes, I have no drawings for the PC-board, the former owner installerad the kit. In the 80' it was very popular to buy "kitchen builder kit" of whatever you can think of, this Guy bought an ignition kit. I have a drawing of a similar kit with a couple of more transistors, but I don't think it helps.

I have had the PC-board away for bench testing, and it works fine, again, could it be the missing ballast resistor?

Yes it could but without the installation instructions for the unit you have it will be difficult, if not impossible to determine what is needed. You could experiment starting with a 3 Ohm resistor. The Ballast block is used because it provides the cast heat sink for the resistor which will run quite hot. Also it is usually only used while the engine is running. When the engine is cranking for startup it is usually bypassed to give a hotter spark. When the key is released from start to run the ballast resistor comes back into the circuit.

So to be sure, does your distributor have mechanical contact points or the hall effect sensor?

I would suspect your coil has been overheated and may need replacement.

I would not trust that circuit board.

I would consider switching to a Pertonix set-up for your distributor which looks like a plain round Willys/Kaiser unit in your photos.

Wes
Yes I will consider to switch to a Pertronic system. I checked on their web page, but they don't deliver outside US. I have found 3 car parts dealers in Sweden selling Pertronic, I will ask them about the particular one for my jeep. I will also check the correct part number on my distributor.

This conversation have been very educational for me, I am an electronic engineer by profession, but my branch is radio and radar, especially on military ships as I worked (newly retired) at a naval shipyard. But I have very Little experience of car electrics
