I recently purchased the below photo. What interested me was the large (I assume) radio on the back of this M38. There is no writing on the back of the photo. I also assume this is Germany some time in the early to mid-1950s. The one Soldier on the right, walking towards the camera, looks like he only has only a white name tape on his uniform. If this is so, this must before the standardation of the white name tape/gold U.S. Army in 1957. I'll have to break out a magnifying glass for a better look.

This first photo is the complete photo...


I tried to focus in on just the M38, but I don't have the best scanner.

Looks like an AN/GRC-3 or -4 setup for Armor with infantry with a VRQ-1 & -3. Spare moved to side civvy mount and radio supplies box added to rear of jeep.

Wes thanks, yeah it looks like they dropped the tailgate and added the box. Good idea for more storage.

Did you notice the tag on the box J-16299? Might post that photo on one of the old Army signal guy web sites and perhaps a signal guy from that era may know more about the set-up.
