Tranny shift ball

How do I tell if I have a threaded or pressed on tranny cane ball?

I've tried to twist it off by hand and no go.
I figured pliers would gnarl it up.

The tranny/transfer are replacements dated later than my
vehicle. The transfer balls are threaded.

If you can't see any threads or thread forms on the bottom of the ball odds are it's press type. You can drill a 3/16-1/4" hole and probe the shaft for threads. The hole can be filled and touched up later. If there are threads then drill the same hole on the opposite side insert 3/16" or 1/4" bolts for handles and try turning it off.

The simple way is to hold the handle horizontally in a vise. Adjust the vice almost snug but the handle must slide left/right easily. Now move the handle so the tranny cover or the base socket of the handle is against the side of the vice. Now slam it the other way knocking the ball off.
