I'm trying to find the timing marks on the pulley. The tab is clearly visible but I can't find any indication of a notch on the pulley itself.
I've looked for the usual places ( flywheel window, etc) but this is the only place I find. The jeep runs fine even with some further retarding, etc of the distributor. I marked it, adjusted it, noticed that it ran a little more smoothly, but put it back where it was to be safe.
I see the multiple holes on the backside of the pulley as seen in the photo. These give a pretty clear reference of how much retardation is accomplished by slight twist of the distributor. Just trying to get a little more power out of a weak engine and want to make sure the timing is correct.

Not knowing what model jeep or which engine you have doesn't make offering help very easy.
I can ascertain that the crank pulley is not an M38 or M38A1 pulley which may be why you cannot find any notches to go with the pointer tab.

If I understand your post here you are saying you looked in the timing window and saw no marks?
This is the early L134 timing window set-up found on the M38, CJ2A & CJ3A. Do you have this window?
If you do and you do not see the timing marks with #1 TDC try placing the 180 degree opposite (timing) cylinder at TDC. The flywheel can be installed two ways, 180 degrees apart.
If still no joy then you will have to get #1 TDC (ACCURATELY) and make TDC mark/notch in the pulley. By accurate I mean less then 1 degree of error. This can be done with a TDC meter (dial indicator) directly on the F134 engine and by using a wigler in conjunction with the dial indicator on the L134 engine. The only alternative on the L134 is to remove the head and take the dial indicator reading off the top of the piston.
Guessing or timing by ear is not a good way to go. Too much advance and you risk spark knock and burned thru pistons. Too far retarded and she'll tend to overheat. The smoothest or fastest idle is not 5 degree BTDC!

| Cj3a engine with no timing window. I bought an RMC engine and am having it rebuilt by a custom shop. I will have them put a timing mark on this pulley before i transfer it from the m38 to my cj3a |

I'm game. Do all the usual places have these? Might need a flywheel as well because it looks rusty.

| So, does the RMC motor have the right pulley? Do you have Ryan's M38 book? It is worth every penny to buy if you don't. Alot of your restoration questions will be answered with that book. |

I will need to look for the book. Don't know where to buy as I just got into this recently.
The motor is down at the shop where they will be doing an evaluation to see what it will take to put it back to proper mechanical condition. Looks like it has the original dual-slot pulley but I haven't inspected it closely. I will stop by there on Friday to check on these things.

| Sounds like you are on the right track. Ryan is a associate of Wes Knettle's right here. I've seen his book listed here, and at various Military Jeep parts houses. (Ryan Miller) Even under M38 for sale on ebay. Buy the book. You will treasure it. John |
