Is there a standard location or is it random. My guess is it may be random.

The space on the block designed to accommodate a metal screw nailed tag was that rectangular space below the distributor. For some reason most Army depot plates are on the center left side of the block or the right aft side of the block. I think many end up mounted low along the block's skirt because they were afraid of popping a leak in the water jacket areas.
Rick,
The only POD I could locate that may have worked the jeep engine is Pirmasens Army Depot in Germany. _________________ Wes K

And my rebuild plate from Ft Ord in Ca., circa 1966, is on the left rear of the block. Did not see it due to the grease and grime until I started cleaning the block. The plate has the MD engine number, date and Ft Ord. It's plain aluminum with two rivet head screws holding it on. Nothin' fancy.
So I suppose they placed these where ever. |

My USAF jeep's motor has a USMC Rebuild plate on it (Albany). I can email the photo to someone for posting if there would be any interest in seeing it. Much of the paint did come off, but it was an interesting artifact to find, even if it does make me go 'hmmm'.

Wes:
Thanks, I have posted it.
The year on the rebuild plate is 1959. I bought the jeep a number of years ago with a stuck motor. This motor may have been put in after it was surplussed (where and when surplussed I do not know), but it was fully installed. The only bubba work that had been done with regard to the motor was a 'heater' installed in the glove box. The PO burned two holes through the firewall in front of the glove box, run heater hoses to a small heat exchanger which was on the glove box floor, (and a large hole cut into the bottom of the box). A cigar box was taped to the exchanger with a fan mounted atop it. The switch for the fan was put in the knockout for the primer pump. It appeared when he wanted heat, he would open the glove box door and turn the fan on.
The jeep is blue underneath with an OD topcoat. I can not tell if it is a military OD or not, but some yellow stencil is visible over the OD (see my gallery). I suppose the stenciled number on all five wheels is something like the hood number, but it lacks the letter that I would expect for a USAF hood number.
I have decided to put is back Blue, as few USAF jeeps seem to be done in Blue. If anyone has ideas/questions/comments, I welcome them as this is a bit of a puzzle.
Oh, I have found traces of a much more 'greenish' paint, which I think does indicate USMC paint, but I just don't know.
Thanks

Interesting subject. Here's the rebuild tag on the Drivers side rear of my M38 engine block. So where is CFMS? Or is that "C" a poorly stamped "O".
