Hi Guys,
I disconnected my generator to regulator cable today to clean up and it's so stiff it won't flex in any direction. I'm afraid it's going to shatter if I try to bend or move it even the smallest amount. So.....I want to replace it now before bad things happen.
I know NOS cables are unobtainium or ridiculously priced if you can find one.......so I'm wondering if anyone knows the specs for the cable itself? I can desolder the shield, re-use the connectors and get some thick heat shrink for the outside, but I'd like to make sure I can find the proper 3 conductor cable before I tear into it. I was hoping the ORD would list the components the cable is made from..........but no such luck. Anybody know what it is?
If I recall correctly it contains two 12 gauge wires for the armature output and one 14 or 16 gauge wire for the Field input. These were just GI wire. The shield was the ground connection. Stiffness in the shield's rubber coat is not a problem unless you want to deep water ford the jeep. If the shield's rubber coat being stiff and cracking is your only issue I would slice and peel it off and add a new hunk of large heat shrink and put it back in service. _________________ Wes K

Hi Wes,
Thanks. I pulled the NSN and found it's actually 3 conductors of 12 AWG stranded, which we've got at work. So I'm comfortable playing with mine now. I've been dying to try the wintergreen (methyl salicylate) rubber restoration trick for some time now........and my rigid reg to gen cable is going to make a great test subject. We'll see how it goes.
