I have had people tell me that instead of putting a kit in my carb I should just clean it out. Sounded kind of weird to me so I bought one of the good kits. Then I get to wondering that if these guys had done this before and it worked maybe I was missing something. Can someone tell me what they were referring to. I would ask them but I live in south Florida and they have all gone up north until the fall. My other question would be what is the best way to display a flag on a flagpole on your Jeep. Could someone post a photo of what they use. Thanks, Mike.
A dirty carb will usually not operate very well. A clean carb with worn out parts will usually not operate very well. Notice the similarities? Have you been around old jeeps long enough to know exactly what a good running carb sounds and feels like?
Cleaning a carb has to be done weather you use a kit or not. Cleaning means a lot more then giving it a bath. Removing all passageway plugs and properly cleaning/flushing those passageways is half the cleaning job. Having the skill and experience to determine the serviceability of the parts in your carb during the cleaning process will go a long way towards insuring your time and energy is not wasted. Can you accurately determine the remaining tension of the many springs and the actual condition of the two diaphragms?
If you are fortunate enough to clean your carb and then it runs very well, good for you!
If it does not you will have to do it all over again!
Take a close look at the kit below. If you just clean the carb you will need the 4 gaskets, the 2 diaphragms and the set of new passageway plugs. If you do the arithmetic it is easy to see that remainder of the kit is a cheaper investment then your time spent twice removing, dis-assembling, cleaning, re-assembling and re-installing.
Wes, I'm sure that the carb needs service. It mostly sat for 5-6 years before I bought it. Don't have much experience with 4 cyl Jeeps but have many years of experience with small block Chevy motors and can rebuild Q-Jet carbs as well as anybody. I really thought that the answer you gave was what I would hear.
The older we get the more valuable our remaining time is. For this reason I try to choose the method I am sure will only result in performing the task once. I take this same approach to working with rear main seals. There are those that are willing to crawl under their jeeps 2 or 3 times to change the seal the hard way. I have always chosen the remove the engine and set her on the stand and do it the easy way that usually only requires the single shot. _________________ Wes K
