Has anyone made (or bought) a handheld remote start switch for their M38/M38a1? I am having trouble getting my a1 running and it is becoming a PITA going back and forth into the Jeep to hit the starter plunger. Obviously, I have no helper to sit and do this for me.

I looked at the 12v ones (like the one below), but since these starters don't have a solenoid and have much higher current running through them.

Describe your trouble. The M38 starters still need someone to engauge the bendix into the flywheel from inside whether you have a electric switch or not. Oilly

Mine is an M38a1 - same thing. I didn't even think about that. Oh well, thanks for crushing that dream! Just kidding.

For troubleshooting you can easily clamp a vice grip plier to the lever on the starter and work it from out front. I've seen some folks fabricate a flat steel tool handle with very tight "U" section at the bottom 90 degrees to the handle that would clamp over the lever horizontal surface between the kick shaft and the switch.

I'll have to look into adapting something when I get back home. Thanks

I used a very small pipe wrench on my M38 when I was putting mine together. Worked quite well

If you have a CJ floor push button switch, you can attach the battery cables to it and make that your remote contact! We did this in Colorado when that top switch contact went bad. Got us by for the next few days of running. One guy held the foot linkage while another just pushed the floor type switch. Wink

I just use a long tire lever, dead simple.

Say, is the picture above a M38A1? I see the oil pressure sender is remote mounted to the other side. That would make a lot more sense than chewing on with it in the M38 position. I may do that mod.
