You mention the steel pan that the cushions originally attached to.....so I'm just wondering.......did the M38 and M38A1 seat cushions use the same PN steel pan? Was the same pan used in the M715 seats? Don't go digging up part numbers and wasting your valuable time..........I'm just asking if you know off the top of your head. I can scrounge around thru the ORDs later if need be.
thanks,

I have both a M38a1 and M715 and the seat pans are different. They are hinged and made of wood and are the same as the early M35's with the box seat base. _________________ Dave

Dave.......thanks for that info!
Brian.......question regarding the seat covers and how they attach to the steel pan on the jeeps........do the covers have a guide wire sewn into them that the little metal triangles in the pan go over?
thanks,

Yeah....thanks guys. I went out and took a peek at what seat bases are under my cushions......the covers are just stapled to a plywood base bolted to the seat frames.
I picked up one nice used original pan and I see they repop them. There's also a few NOS ones around out there......so I'll get my seats correct in the Spring.
Thanks,

Military fabric shops were routinely tasked to locally fabricate cushion covers for MV's and aircraft both US & Canadian. That said, unless you have a cover with ORD and/or FSN's on them or you have a sealed container with an NOS cover with ORD and/or FSN's on them the odds are you have a locally fabricated cover.
To take the original cover theory to the final positive ID level would require the Factory Blueprints and production line BOM's.
The only service manual shot of the underside of a front seat in the M38 is on page 40 or TM 9-1804B. If you look closely you can almost make out the little spear tabs and along the rear edge of the seat bottom is a piece of string hanging down. _________________ Wes K

Hi Guys,
Well........here I go complicating things again. I just received a used seat pan with springs and what's left of the cover........and the cover does have a guide wire in the bottom hem that the little triangular teeth clamp to. It's not a steel cable, but rather a rope of sorts that the cover material goes over and is then stitched to itself. Seems to be the perfect size rope for the size of the little triangle teeth, as they curve around the rope nicely.
Now I don't know the history of these parts.......the guy had it listed as a M715 pan and springs, hence my previous question, but it's definitely an M38/A1 pan. The springs themselves are the later coil style (in remarkably good shape as is the pan), not the earlier S-springs. I assume the pan didn't change when the spring type did.........but could be wrong. I don't have any ORDs later than the 1955 version. Only the very top of the canvas cover is missing, the 4 sides are intact and still attached to the pan.
regards,

Any chance you could take a couple of pics. I am doing seat pan and springs myself . I picked up some springs on ebay. I think they are right for a m38. I picked up pans from MWM and they are nice. _________________ Sam, M38 71767

Hi Sam,
Here you go. First pic is overall pan, second shows the guide rope detail and the third shows the little pointed triangles bent over the rope. Anybody know if the repop seat covers have this guide rope feature?
thanks,
bob
