I just purchased a Schumacher SE-3000. It will charge 6, 12, 18, and 24 volt systems which is perfect for me since i didnt want to buy one that would just do 24 volts.

That depends on what you expect from the charger and what type charging you intend to do.

The choices are endless from Hi Amp starter units to very low amp trickle units to high end/high dollar maintainers.

One should first gather a very detailed understanding of how batteries work, what types are out there and what charger types match which battery types.

As a rule of thumb the one size fits all chargers are a jack of all trades and master of none thing.

Yea I didnt need a charger that specialized in conditioning batteries or slowly topping them off when not in use.

I needed some thing that could perform an occasional charge to multiple different applications and an occasional jump start on a vehicle.

If my budget was unlimited i could have purchased 4 different chargers for each type with "smart" functions that apply current in all kinds of fancy ways...but that would have been overkill....

A "Solargizer" works great as well. I've used one on my vehicle for over a year now. Though not really a charger. its more of a battery maintainer. Kept the batteries happy during storage.

I originally did the unhook the cables run two 12 volt chargers shuffle. That's ok but I decided to go hi-tech. The Northern Tool catalog lists several solar chargers/maintainers I bought the 5 watt trickle charger cause it's about the same size as the windshield planning to mount it behind the glass. When I received it the instructions said it was weatherproof so I made a bracket that hooks to the roof of my hardtop. Now here's the best part the instructions say it puts out up to about 25 volts so I put my meter on it and sure enough 24.8 volts. I hook it up on the opposite -/+ posts and with a quick disconnect on the ground cable I've always got full charge. One thing though since mine isn't restored it sits outside all the time in the sun facing south which is perfect for solar charging. If your parked inside I don't see any reason you couldn't mount the panel outside on the wall and run the wires through the wall or window to your jeep.

I use the 24 volt BatteryMinder charger, maintainer, and conditioner. Been using it all winter and I love it.

Just picked up a Deltran Battery Tender 24V. Ran me about $60 to $70 as I recall. Seems to work well to keep both batteries in good condition until I get the M38A1 ready for a road trip.

Bringing up an old thread here.

I bought the little BatteryMinder 1500 at Northern Tool earlier this week. I had one battery that would charge up, but drop back to 10.5v when disconnected from the charger. I hooked the BatteryMinder up and it has been charging/desulfating for 5 days now - or at least I THINK it has. It might just be in maintenance mode (I'll have to check the lights LEDs again tonight).

Anyhow, my question is about hooking up for charging BOTH batteries in the Jeep without buying their $22 splitter. I'm thinking that the BatteryMinder should be connected to the FIRST battery, then run 18ga jumpers from the Pos-Pos and Neg-Neg terminals. With that being said, do I need to disconnect the battery cable between the Neg and Pos terminals of the 2 batteries also? I know you can charge both batteries at the same time using a charger on each battery - WITHOUT disconnecting the cable between the batteries. Wouldn't this be the same scenario?

My plan is to buy one of their quick connect ports and mount it (hidden). That way, I can pull into it's parking place in the shop and plug in the single wire from the BatteryMinder. Then only have to give a little thought to maintaining the battery by checking the electrolyte every once in awhile and be done.

OK, so I did a search on charging batteries and got a few hits. I read through them after I get back from lunch. Don't roast me yet about not searching! I'm at work and trying to educate myself at the same time. I'll post back if I find the answer I was looking for.

Yep, answered my own question - you should disconnect the short battery cable or buy a 24v BatteryMinder. I guess if I want it to be as easy as I want it to be I'll have to spend the extra $$ for a 24v model and use this one on the side by side and lawnmower batteries!

Hi wilfreeman,

I've got the 4-battery Delran Battery Tender. Between my garden tractor, my full size tractors, snow blower, chipper, cars, trucks and MVs I always have 4 batteries on charge. I usually rotate between groups of 4 every two weeks or so over the winter so when I go to use something I know the battery(s) are fully charged. The 4 battery tender is a bit more expensive, but for me fully worth it. I've also got a single 6v tender for my Cub tractor. Been using them both for more years than I'd like to count and never had an issue with either. I don't think they make a 24V version........but could be wrong.

regards,
bob

Yeah, the battery problem is real! I am in the same boat - between the 2 M38a1s, 4 wheeler, side by side, lawnmower and Massey, I always have one with a dead or low battery and replacing one or more yearly. Gets expensive!

I checked on my battery when I got home - still charging with the desulfating light flashing. 3 cells look new and the others are in different states of scaling. Hope it works à
