Hi Guys,

I'll be needing to buy front seat OD canvas covers (don't need foam or springs or pans) in the Spring for my A1, so I started looking online last night for what they cost. I checked all the popular vendors thinking the prices would all be the same, but was surprised to find they vary quite a bit. So I'm wondering if any of you guys have actually compared covers side by side and which one are the best to buy. Obviously, if you pick one online and don't physically compare them to the competition you'll probably like what you got. I'm looking to see if anyone has had covers from a known vendor and then replaced them with covers from another vendor and noted the differences. I'm not looking to bash anyone's products here........I only ask the question because the prices are different, I'd like to understand why and I only want to buy these once. I would think a known size piece of canvas, with a known number of stitches and seams would cost the same no matter who made it. But apparently not. If you don't want to mention names I understand.........but PM me. I won't share your thoughts with anyone. If any type of seat cover comparison has already been done.........please help me find the post. I searched and found nothing in way of comparisons.

thanks,
bob

Bob,
First my disclaimer. I have not bought any covers yet.

The three main suppliers are:
Beachwood Canvas
New Life Canvas
Weebee Webbing

I've been researching all three and their products
for some time.

A few notes. Beachwood has no prices for covers on their
website, and says that covers are all custom made for
Individual orders.

New Life currently shows a four piece front set Canvas
covers only for 121.00 in stock.

Weebee shows s four piece front set canvas covers
120.00. Individual covers are 45 each,

Weebee has a paragraph detailing their manufacturing
process and their MIL spec Canvas from a military supplier.
I have heard nothing but good things about Weebee.

New Life has some ongoing discussions regarding delivery
timing over on the G.

When I get ready I will contact Dave at Weebee.

By the way. Weebee also sells covers in as close to Leatherette
or the military vinyl if you are so inclined.

That is my opinion and others mileages may vary.
Take care,

I Have had and sold just about all the brands available and for the most part do not match.
Beachwood is thicker and much oilier thus making it darker
Weebee is good but a little thiner
Surplus City is it's own brownish color and thickness is about like Weebee
Mullins is China made stuff in pre-packaged bags
New Life is very close to weebee if not the same canvas and the closest of any to match with another brand.

I have original NOS in stock and they do not look like anything on the current market. Both in color and thickness. In fact the late production stuff for the M38A1 is actually just medium green cotton fabric and untreated.

There are only three quality shops specializing in MV canvas & vinyl.

Beachwood Canvas, New Jersey

New Life Resources Minnesota

PIZZOFERRATO ENTERPRISES. "WEEBEE WEBBING"., Ohio

Most of your dealers will sell one or more of their products.

Matt............is that you? See, now that's EXACTLY why I joined this forum.......for insight like that. Great info and thanks. I love the parts I get from you.......you must have the best job on the planet! Shameless plug....I know.

Brian........your info was good too....don't get depressed. Wink
The problem I have with WeeBee is the website said the prices were effective from today Jan 17, 2011!!!!! You mean the price hasn't changed in almost 7 years? So not sure WHAT to think about that. And yeah, Beachwood not putting prices is also a bit odd.

Like I've said before.........I've heard rave reviews for all three of the vendors in question.......but those folks weren't comparing each to the other with the covers physically in hand. So that makes their reviews questionable. I think Matt's info is the most telling, but if anyone has more to add..........please chime in.

Maybe I should just buy some old Army pup tent halves at the next meet for a few bucks and make my own covers!!! Nah..........too lazy.

thanks guys,
bob

I bought the full set of seat covers and the winter top from WeeBee Webbing and I'm very well pleased with the product as well as the friendly service I received. I highly recommend them. I'm not saying the other vendors aren't good but I'm happy with my choice.

Brian, there is a trick to using the Beechwood site. Open the catalog, get the number for the set you want and take that number to the "SEARCH" box on their web site and it will bring up a page with all related parts and prices.

Thanks Wes.

It is a bit busy.

I do not see a front seat cushion set only,
but six cushion set as you posted.

Individual covers are 35, which extrapolating by four,
makes a four piece front set 140.00, which is in line
with the other vendors.

Bob, one of our members did take his duffel bags
with his stencils on them and made his covers. Pretty
neat idea, just don't go sewingbonbtge wife's machine
with her standard needles!

Hi B,

I'm one ahead of ya, brother. I was joking about the pup tent halves.........but not really. Last year I purchased a nice condition antique Singer Model 15 sewing machine from the 1940's. Got it because it was rated best at sewing the tough stuff (leather, canvas, etc). Figured I'll make my own canvas parts for my M37s, but just haven't gotten around to it yet. Life keeps getting in the way. Might just have to start making seat covers sooner rather than later, but at $30 a cover (Surplus City Jeep Parts) it just might not be worth my time and be worth buying them instead.

Truth be told I'm still torn between canvas and leatherette. Although I always thought canvas was bulletproof, the stuff I have seems to get soiled and dirty pretty easily. Love the smell, but not easy to repair and still look good. But don't know if I trust leatherette to last either. So many decisions............I'm going back to bed.

Later,
bob

Hey Bob,
I always remember vinyl burning the crap out of you in the summer.
One advantage of cloth or leather over vinyl.

I'm torn as well, but given the likelihood of me driving here more in summer
than winter...

Sent you a PM.

Take care,

Hi B.......that's a very good point. I guess I assumed I'd have a canvas top by this summer........but I'm real bad at assuming. But I do remember as a kid the vinyl seats in my folks Electra 225 burning the crap out of my legs in the summertime. On the other hand getting leatherette would allow me to have fun with all the MV "experts" at meets who'll tell me Willys Jeeps never came with vinyl covers.....only canvas. That might be worth burning my butt for. Laughing

Decisions....decisions........

bob

Up here in the north country the vinyl gets two strikes. One for too darn hot on the butt in the summer and two for too darn cold on the butt in the winter. Nothing I own has vinyl in it. Wink
