Hi Guys,
I didn't want to hijack Dan's thread on M38 engine compartment colors so I'll start this one.
Wes, you said something interesting. You said the battery compartment was coated in an acid proof coating. I see that coating in my M38A1 battery compartment. You mention it was applied to the battery trays as well. So a couple of questions for you;
What is the coating.........is it just undercoating?
On my A1 the coating in the battery compartment is OD and it appears to be original. Did they apply the coating before the body was painted?
Was the coating applied to the battery hold down brackets as well? Mine seem to be rubber coated, but are NOS replacements, not the original hold downs installed on the assembly line. Usually the ORD calls out the surface finish for parts, but says nothing about the finish of the battery hold downs.
Was this coating applied to the underside of the battery compartment lid as well? Mine has been blasted and painted so I don't if it was coated originally.
Again the only perfect answer is the Factory Blueprint. All the motor pool policies and industry standards suggest the same treatment. I would guess undercoatings were used early on until all the fancier coatings became available.
The ORD 9 cannot always be relied upon for this kind of info. yes, it offers it up once in awhile but not always. The reliable sources are the factory blueprints and the factory production BOMS. _________________ Wes K
