I thought for the longest time that i did not have a timing mark on my pully, But I was wrong. My mark was a tiny drill hole almost flush with the timing cover. I put a dab of silver paint on it in the photo.

You were fortunate that the timing cover and the pulley were original mates. Most folks aren't that lucky and their engines have many parts that were not there originally.

Whenever you delve into a fresh unfamiliar engine one must always go back to basics and make darn sure the ignition timing marks are somewhere and are correctly mated. NEVER ASSUME THE EXISTING MARKS ARE CORRECT UNTIL YOU SATISFY YOURSELF THEY ARE!

Only two ways to do that.

Pull the pulley and timing gear cover and set valve timing marks to TDC. Then confirm #1 is TDC on compression. Then select a set of timing marks that will work fro the parts you have and use a degree wheel to locate 5 Deg BTDC and get everything marked so it is clearly visible.

Leave the timing gear cover and pulley on and find TDC by rotating #1 to TDC on compression and then using a dial indicator or wigler to accurately locate TDC. Make the TDC marks then us a degree wheel to find 5 Deg BTDC and get everything marked so it is clearly visible.
