I came across a M series starter like the M38 that has no place in the rear to attach to the L bracket.Any know what this goes on?

What's the part number on the data plate? If the plate is missing it could be off any of 50 or more applications. Does it look like the early or late M38 starter? Post a photo.

When you say back end, that would mean the nose or drive end of the starter. On the M38 starters the L bracket bolts to the forward end or commutator end.

I couldn't see the part number but it looks the same as the late M38 starter but it has no lug on the back for the brace that bolts to the block. The guy claims it came off an M38A1.
