PostPosted: Wed May 23, 2018 1:50 pm    Post subject: Gas Can Carrier spacers... Reply with quote

I am putting back on a proper era Jerry Can bracket on the tailgate of my 1951 M38.

From Miller's book, I see the bolts are 3/8-16NC x 1 3/8"

Does anyone have the width of the standoffs that go between the can holder and the tailgate?? from pictures it looks to be about 1/2"??
'
The dimples on the back of the carrier, where the mounting bolts go, seem to stand off the carrier far enough to clear the tailgate ribs. What is the purpose of the additional spacers??

Thanks, Jeff

They are used to insure the upper part of the gas can clears those footman loops and the top bows when the the top is down.

I made a set two weeks ago out of 4140 steel 45 caliber rifle barrel stock; and Mil Spec phosphates them too. Better steel than original, so they won't deform under a full can of gas. They are rifled inside too but you can't see it!
