I'm in the process of cleaning up a MCZ4001UT starter.

I've done a ohm reading check on the windings and checked for grounds. All appear to be good on that test. But I notice 5 places on the commutator where the wires connect to the copper part that the brush rides on (don't know it's proper name at this time) the wires have a look of getting hot there.
I'm thinking that the connection may not be solid even though ohm meter reading (3 ohms) is the same as the ones which don't look to have gotten hot.

The question is, are the windings stamped in or soldered at that point.

Staked & Soldered. The copper drum with the mica undercut is called the commutator.

All your questions can be answered in the TM 9-1825B dated NOV 1952 Chapter 6, Section VI, Group 4 - Sealed Starters.

This is most of the Starter section but lacks the charts & testing.
