If I understand correctly MD 82542 and after was considered the late frame with the extension on the #2 mount and no bolts through the toe board gusset so what would the date of delivery be for that Jeep? Thanks Jeff

Wes or Jeff,

Do you have a picture of what this discussion is about? Where is the #2 mount?

Just trying to learn new stuff...

Thanks,

http://www.willysmjeeps.com/v2/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=10984. Take a look at this and the last picture was what I was referring to.

The easiest way to determine weather your A1 frame is early, middle or late is:

Early frame

Middle Frame

Late frame

The extended right side body mount #2 appears on the later M38A1 frames:

Early M38A1 frame with standard right #2 body mount.

Late M38A1 frame with extended #2 right tub mount.

The difference in early vs late tub #1 mounts shown below:

Early M38A1 Frame 31 tub mount

Late M38A1 Frame #1 tub mount is without the vertical bracket.

What would be the dates for the middle style frame and serial number? I assume the middle frame ended April of 55 when did it start?

Thanks for the pictures Wes!

My 11-53, MD-64580 has the early frame per your pictures (6-welded nuts on the front frame horn, stair-stepped frame end and short ell brackets at #2.

I also have the nuts welded on the frame and the hole in the side of the gussets for the vertical bracket at #1, but there was none there when I took it apart (per your picture they ended that bracket at MD-60406). I also don't have any hole through the gusset, hat channel or top of the frame at #1. Was there a time when there wasn't any tub mounting bolts at #1? Would it still get a rubber shim at #1?

The ORD 9 parts manual only list two frames: Early PN's WO# 805715, ORD# 8677578 and the late frame without the grill support holes WO# 809121. I am assuming that the minor changes between the early & middle frame occurred on the blue prints and there was no change in the frame part numbers. The ORD splits early/late at MD79490 April 1955. One would have to have access to the Willys blue print for frame PN WO# 805715 to determine when those minor changes were ordered.

I do not ever recall seeing a hole drilled in the hat channel that extends forward below the toe board gusset. The rubber shim goes there no matter what the serial number. Yes the side bolts and brackets disappear at MD 60406 about Sept. 1953.

So after Sept 1953 there were no bolts anchoring the tub to the frame at the #1 position (toe board gusset), it just has a rubber shim cemented in place?

Thanks,
