What would a stamp of 3w with the w underlined on the block top surface under where the head gasket would go near the engine number mean? I’d post a picture but I don’t know how to meet the requirements in the faq.

Very good question, it always fun trying to figure out someones code. My machine shop told me years ago that sometimes they have to mill the top of the block to get it trued up flat. They said they always take a piece of paper and pencil and rub it over the serial number so they can restamp it exactly how it was. They have been doing Willys engines for 4 or 5 generations in their shop. If the top of the block was milled and i hate guessing anything. W = 6 on the numerical code. Was the machine shop trying to say they milled off .036. Just a SWAG. A pic would be nice, maybe someone else has a better idea. Jim

Back up the camera a wee bit so we can get a better idea of exactly where it is located. Gary said it was under the head gasket near the serial number. I've reviewed dozens of block photos already and not found that type marking on any close to the serial ledge.

The photo still does not show the overall location of the stamping. I still would like to see a photo that will at least depict the stamping using coverage of #1 cylinder bore to the water pump.

A photo more like this one:
