I found another post where someone said they own a Jeep that has a DOD of Feb 1955 with a hood number that he was able to uncover on his hood of 2A3736 so with my number being 2A3988 would that mean it was built after Feb of 55?

OK I also see a Jeep dated 7/54 with a hood number of 2A622 so I'm not sure where that places mine or am I missing something?

And that is a Marine Number.

There are several posts detailing the differences in the Marine vehicles,
including undercoat and a reinforced rear bumper.

Trying to use two individual jeep hood numbers to date yours won't work. You need to be looking at a large data base that has several hundred listings and then you can see where the obvious erroneous hood numbers that do not fit the flow and make a more informed decision.

In my estimate above I used Scott's old M38A1 data base containing over 750 listings. To give you an idea there are a total of 120 listings for 1954 thru 1955. There were only 14 2AXXXX hood numbers listed among those 120 listings. They were not in anywy resembling a precise sequence yet all our hard data shows these jeeps rolled out the factory door in production sequence with sequenced hood numbers. I said production sequence not serial sequence! The jeeps were started down the assembly line in serial sequence but for many reasons including Quality Control, parts shortages and excetera may jeeps were sidelined and their arrival at the hood number paint booth was later then their adjacent serialed brothers they had become separated from.

Here are the 14 2AXXXX hood numbers I found spread out over two years of production in the order they lay in the database:

1954

2A8448 JUL

2A8945 JUL

2A9291 AUG

2A3450 SEP

2A1045 DEC

2A8013 JUN

2A9005 JUL

2A2623 SEP

2A9817 SEP

2B0046 SEP

1955

2A4805 MAR

2A5770 APR

2A7054 MAY

2A7259 MAY

And in your last post we can now add:

2A622__? JUL 54

2A3736 FEB 55

Now you are armed with the best info available. Since we now know we have two M38A1's bearing the same hood number 2A3736 and we know that the Army did not let that happen then it can only mean that one of you 2 have the other's hood number. So we actually have no idea which of you is the real 2A3736.

It is possible based on the layout of the hood numbers I listed that 2A3736 could be a late 54 or early 55 number but now your new problem is to whom does the # 2A3736 really belong to!

Can you give us the URL for the post you found your matching hood number in?

You should complete our M38A1 survey as soon as you can so we can compare your jeeps parts to the period Feb 55.

Where could I go to get a look at the data bases you are talking about ?

https://forums.g503.com/viewtopic.php?t=44083

Also is is that a Marine number, because I do not think it's a marine Jeep.

My house. I have been working on reformatting that data base for 5 years. I still have a way to go. I do not have it digitalized. I posted a very clear map of what 2A XXXX numbers exist on my database for the years 1954 & 55 and which year/mon they are listed for.

If I understand your question you are asking if that 2A 622? # in your photo is a USMC #. The answer is no. The USMC hood numbers for that era were a simple six numerical digits with USMC adjacent to them. All the 2A XXXX numbers I have listed are US Army hood numbers.

Here ya go, I will re-post my first list incorporating the two new 2A XXXX numbers you introduced:

1954

2A8448 JUL

2A8945 JUL

2A9291 AUG

2A3450 SEP Your jeep 2A3988 would fit after this one.

2A1045 DEC Your jeep 2A3988 would also fit after this one.

2A8013 JUN

2A622__? JUL 54

2A9005 JUL

2A2623 SEP

2A9817 SEP

2B0046 SEP

1955

2A3637 FEB 55 Your jeep 2A3988 would also fit after this one.

2A4805 MAR

2A5770 APR

2A7054 MAY

2A7259 MAY

Now can you see why you must first decide which numbers that show up in a chronological list look like they belong there or not?

I think the problem that you are having is that between years, the numbers would some times reset back, 2A0001 would have been the first class 2 vehicle and it would build so on, at 2A9999 it would then change to 2B0001. This lead to great confusion and sometime duplicate numbers on different year vehicles which is why in 1968 they changed the number system so that the last two were the year accepted. That's why on later 60's M151's you would see the number style change to some thing like this 02A00168. Bamaj if you need any help with markings just let me know or check out my markings website, www.deltateamdecals.com
