Can you give us a wee bit more data & insight?

1 - You'll need a dwell meter to check contact dwell.

2 - Are you working on an engine with previous operating milage or on a fresh rebuild?

3 - If fresh rebuild are you absolutely certain that the the timing gears under the cover are properly set with each other? Are you absolutely certain the timing markings you will be using are correct? Are you absolutely certain the oil pump and distributor have been properly indexed together?

3 - Do you have the original 24V distributor or a civvy distributor.
