IF (big if) my compression tests good and even, and my oil-pan looks clean, should I re-build my F-134 anyway while I have the whole jeep apart (T-90 has to be re-built - synchros are bad), or just leave it? Are there other considerations other than compression and checking for sludge in the oil pan?

On average, how much is someone going to charge me for a "typical" F-134 re-build?

Does it burn oil? Does the head leak coolant?

It's probably worth it to at least partially take it down, of which you can probably do yourself (it's a pretty simple engine to take apart). I would personally pull the head, take out the pistons, etc, to check for scaring on the crank, etc and make sure there are no surprises. Depending how many miles are on your engine since the last major rebuild, it might be worth it to at replace the rings, lap the valve seats, and "refresh" all the major wear and tear items. Also, seals tend to fail as a function of time, so again, depending on how old they are, it might be worth it to replace them.

It's going to be a lot easier to do any work to the engine now than it is when it's under the hood with all the accessories, etc, mounted to it.

How did the engine run before you started your jeep's resto?

If it ran well, did not smoke, has good compressions, no odd noises or knocks, starts very easily then there's no need to disassemble it or rebuild it.

If you want to build a 100% resto with a corresponding increase in vehicle value and prefer to have everything like new then you should rebuild it.

Hey, Hilbilly - I actually have a re-built (I think it's re-built) F-134 that came with my jeep as a spare. I was going to try to sell it to finance some of my restoration as the "War Dept" is not giving me much of a budget, but may use it instead, IF my current engine isn't going to cut it.

I might then purchase a Genset head unit and hook up whichever engine I don't use in the jeep for backup power and maybe to power a compressor or something.

F-134's don't seem to bring much for the power they produce.
