Hi,

My beautiful wife bought me a 1952 M38A1 for Christmas. I need some help identifying the carb so I can get a rebuild kit for it. It looks like the orginal military all olive drab. The only id on the carb was a triangular tab that had 950 embossed on the top and C5 underneath. Is it possible to get a rebuild kit from that?

The gas tank is stuck. I removed the strap and it will not budge. I got a bar underneath and all it did was indent the floor.
I grabbed the tank and shook it and the whole jeep moved. Am I missing something? Could it be painted in?

I would like to keep as many of the parts orginal as possible. The tank on the inside was very rusted when I removed the drain plug nothing came out until I stuck a nail in the hole, would it be worth time and effort getting it cleaned or should I just rip it out and get a replacement?

The fuel lines cant be budged either any ideas on getting them loose? Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

Regards,

Paul

Do you have the original tank with the large filler angled back?
Does your gas tank have a strap behind the seat holding the tank to the floor? It has to be lifted out in a way to clear the filler neck.

You will want to salvage everything you can regarding the gas tank. My M38 was missing the proper military tank, you can wrap up $500 quick in sender, pickup tube & filter, cap, & strap.

PB Blaster works good to loosen rusty fittings. Use patience.
I picked up some Kano Kroil "the oil that creeps" from Midway USA they sell it for cleaning guns. I've been experimenting with it and it seems to work good too.

Hello Paul,
The carb is the correct one, YS950S. Overhaul instructions are in our download section. The TM reference is TM 9-1826A. This manual was published in 1952 and only shows the specs fro the M38's YS637S but I have the 950S spec sheet loaded as well.

The only quality kit currently on the market is Midwest Military's kit (also sold by AJP).

The gas tank lies on a set of thin rubber strips which can be corroded to the point that your tank is stuck to them very well.

There are good M38A1 reproduction tanks out there. The senders, fuel pickup/filter/vent adapter installations are still available at Midwest Military.

I have many good photos on my photo site that will help with your A1. Many of the M38 photos will also apply to your A1.
