I came across this timing light and the I do not know what it is used for. MANUAL SAYS WORKS ON 12 OR 24 VOLT SYSTEM AS WELL AS ANYTHING W/ MAGNETO.. MFG. BY SIMPSON ELECTRIC MODEL PTL-4. SAYS NOTHING ABOUT VEHICLES??

can this be used to correctly time an M38A1 or ?

the nsn# is: 4910-00-937-5724
I failed to find any more details about this on the net.
thanks all Very Happy

It should. Just about any timing light will work on the M38A1. Remember you need to power the light with the correct voltage and you must have an adapter from the standard GI adaptor kit for the plug lead.

Ancient post. I picked up a Simpson Electric PTL-4 Timing Light but it's missing the Manual. Any chance somebody has one to scan and send a copy so Wes can put it in the downloads section?

PM sent to MODIFIED.

Thanks!

Wes, thanks, same FSN/NSN, but different manufacturer (typical). I'm sure operation is pretty much the same simple concept.

This is the Simpson Electric PTL-4 that I acquired ($28 delivered). Not a gun-pistol grip inductive type. Old school direct connect I believe. I was hoping to get a copy of its manual if possible. I called Simpson Electric (great old American Company they are), but they're closed on Friday's. Hoping for a call back from them next week telling me they have a dusty old original. Hope it doesn't cost me more than the tool..... Shocked

If you order the NSN 4910-00-937-5724 you may get one of several timing lights carried under that same stock number. Most are extremely similar. In this case you want TM 9-4910-669-14 .

Ron,
I came across the same Simpson Electric timing light for $10 on eBay and, of course it was described as "In fine working order". Probably was - with the exception of the light itself!
Anyhow, it came with a manual that I can scan and email you if you'd like. Not much to it but I also like to have the docs.
FYI, I sent an email to Simpson Electric customer service to see if I could buy a replacement bulb (Flash-Tube) but they said they haven't stocked parts for that unit since 1981.
