I have the engine out of my '55 M38A1 at present. The front sheetmetal is off. I want to remove the transmission and transfer case to clean and paint them and reinstall the engine, transmission , and transfer case as an assembly.I have the sheet metal covers, or plates out of the floorboard. My question is.. is there anything I especially need to watch for when removing the top cover and shifter lever of the transmission or the transfer case levers? Thanks Question

Once you have the floor panels off all you need to do is drop the tranny transfer to the floor and slide it out. You don't really have to pull the shiftes to get that far. Then just use the manuals (TM 9-8014 & TM 9-8015-2) and follow these two great rebuild guides:
