m38 light switch help

Hey, I have a Cannon plug for my 3 lever light switch which has 10 short wire stubs sticking out of it. I want to use this to make a wiring harness, but I can't make out the letters on the plug. I have seen the diagrams of the light switch from the side, but this does not help. Does anyone have a picture of where these 10 wires would go looking straight into the plug with the notch at 12 o'clock? Hope this makes sense, and thanks for the help, Paynzer.

I can't help with a straight on photo of the plug but you should be able to master this view and apply it. Wink

Hey Wes, I am missing the wire that is supposed to be in the "F" position. What is the trick to wiring into the Cannon plug? Thanks.

It's your lucky day. I found an extra plug lying here.

Here's the harness plug with the female sockets/pins

L & J are not normally used on early M series. F is main 24 volts in. You'll need it.

You must disassemble the plug.

1-Connect plug to a switch so you can hold it from turning.

2-Remove the wire markers.

3-Remove the rear shell that surrounds the rubber at the rear. You may need to do a little WD40 soaking to get the shell to turn free of the rubber.

4-Using a small blade plastic screw driver tip work around the rubber grommet to loosen it so it can be pulled or pushed aft away from the contact pins, Pry the rubber block out and slide it off the wires.

5-Using a pin removal tool push the pins out the rear of the remaining shell.

6-If pins were originally soldered you can now de-solder them and solder in your new wire. Remember to thread your new wire through the rear shell/nut and the appropriate hole in the rubber grommet before you solder the new wire in the pin.

7-If the pins were crimped originally you will toss them and buy new pins from Saturn Surplus, Midwest Military etc. With the new pins go back to step 6. If you prefer to crimp the new pins just buy the crimp tool from either supplier.

Thanks for the pleasant comments. I will remind you guys that Wes also had to learn to walk first before he could run! Wink

I take a lot of negative hits because I prefer to be specific with my answers, as brief as possible and provide a valid base for any opinions I offer and use photos whenever possible. Most of the hits come from the GURU who loves himself on the G503!

I have always been a "Jack of all trades and master of none" kinda technician. Ever since entering the USAF in 66 as a crew chief on heavies I have learned to Get the Book, Read the Book, Use the Book, Develop better ways to get things done and then when I was a supervisor I always taught the folks that first we learn the right way, then the USAF way and finally My way. I would never tolerate a young troop trying his way before he had become proficient in the first three ways.

Hence as long as Ryan and I are running this web site you will, for the most part only see substantiated data allowed to be the final word in a post and you will see more and more manuals showing up on our downloads page.

One thing I hope you never have to see is this kind of crap:
