Does anyone know if the RT 524 was used on the M38 (I have one already) and
If so, then does anyone have any info in how to install one. I have a 52 M38CDN (or it will be when I am finished)
and I have the MP50 antenna base and an AB15 antenna for my jeep.
I am looking for the type of cables and the routing of the cables and wires for this set up.
The M-38 would have used the RT-66, 67, or 68 and power supplies...
The RT-524 is late Vietnam / Coldwar radio used in most military vehicles...
If you do mount the RT-524 it would need to go on the Driver's side rear fender well and if 24 volt the positive lead would go to the undercowl battery positive post with ground being the chassis...
The RT524 was part of the VRC12 setup and was used on the M38A1. There is a remote possibility that early on during Vietnam that Army advisers may have been equipped with a few M38's and M606's with the VRC12. The VRC-12 series used both the manual tuning RT524 and the auto-tune w/10 presets RT246 in combination and separately. This was the primary field combat radio setup from about 1962 thru 1990. I know I've seen paperwork showing this setup in the M38A1. I'll have to look around when I get some time.
I have a full set of PDF manuals for the VRC-12 system but they are dated 1980's and newer and their -10HR only shows the M151 1/4T installation. But if anyone has a copy of the 60's edition I am sure there will be data for M38A1.

I can't say if this is fact or fiction but I ran into a 3rd Infantry guy at one of the shows.
He used to be in charge of a whole motor pool in the 1960's.
He said they still used M38's in Germany during that time. He had a
comment that if the 82nd Airborne had a bad drop they would come and
requisition his good Jeeps and he would have to go down the next level
and reclaim older Jeeps as needed for the 3rd Army. So it could be
possible for the M38 - RT-524 combination to exist.
