It's the 1954 military upgrade. I bought it from Midwest Military, but a few sell it. There is a "regulator", basically a length of ceramic with coil wound over it, and wires sticking out of both ends. Based on where it attached to the heater switch, I think it controls whether the heater runs high or low. it is supposed to have brackets that mount it to the firewall. It didn't have those, I was trying to figure out how to fabricate something, and I broke it. Does anyone have any idea of how I can replace it?

This is it, the red is my guess of what the bracket (that runs through the hollow center) would look like.

The "regulator" is a wire wound resistor. They are used when heat dissipation is a concern. The ones I have used typically have a slider on them to allow one to adjust the rating. It can be replaced with a rheostat just as easily as the original. Mounting of the resistors can be done with a clamp type bracket around the middle of the resistor (insulated would be a good thing), sort of like a fuse holder. I don't remember the vendor we use, but I will try to remember to look it up when I go to work in the morning.

Go to page 5 of the M38A1 hot water kit instructions TB 9-2855-43. Item "F" at the top of the page is what you broke. It's Ordnance part number is 8710856. Google that part number and you'll get many hits:

Here's 10 each for sale on Ebay at Buy it now price $21.50 each + $5.15 shipping.

Or you can shop any on line elctrical discount house using the technical specs for the resistor found right here.

You are welcome.

All it takes to find 2/3rds of what you are looking for is a wee bit of in house research, the search function of this web site and the good old GOOGLE web site.
