So I was in the process of cleaning out the old grease from my right front axle shaft when the universal joint came apart. I was able to find all five balls which rolled all over. Anyway, my issue now is I can't seem to get it back together. Try as I might I can't seem to get all five balls in there. is there any trick to this I am missing?

One other question. The axle shafts and particularly the universal joints were packed with lots of grease. In fact, every part of the front assembly u joints, hubs, etc. were just as full of grease as they could be. Is this correct or did someone get carried away. Thanks as always.

Rather then light all the fires on the Knuckle Pudding arguments you should just use the web site search function here and on the G503 page for the term "Knuckle Pudding" and you can re-read the several hundred opinions expressed in those 20 or 30 threads on the topic.

The civilian SM-1002 manual is an easier to understand guide for the knuckle joint then the military manuals.

You need to ID which axle knuckle you have. Bendix with the loose balls and center pin or Rzeppa with the caged balls.

The easiest to have "fall apart" and watch the 5 balls roll is the Bendix. If that is what you have there is no trick to getting it back together except put the center pinned one in first. Keep working at it and you will find the angles where you can slip the others into place.

The manual will give guidelines on the inspection of the bendix balls and sockets before assembly.

I did finally get it thanks! I'm not sure exactly how I got it, but its back together.

Wes I have to tell you I never would have thought to search using "knuckle pudding" I never heard that term before. Live and learn.

Once I get the front axle back together I'll have this thing back up on all four wheels again. I had set a goal to get that much done by Christmas but I've run out of time. Another day or two should do it....maybe by New Years.

Don't rush it. Half the fun is getting there and the other half is driving it.

I started my M38 project in 2004. I now have her painted blue and on her own chassis and wheels but the engine and gear boxes are on the stands in my shop yet. I've had a lot of help the past year and half.
